Atheists Say
Christianity; an athiests perspective.
Christianity; The popular belief that a celestial Jewish baby who is also his own father, born from a virgin mother, died for three days so that he could ascend to heaven on a cloud and then make you live forever only if you symbolically eat his flesh, drink his blood and telepathically tell him you accept him as your lord & master so he can remove an evil force from your spiritual being that is present in all humanity because an immoral woman made from a man's rib was hoodwinked by a talking reptile possessed by an malicious angel to secretly eat forbidden fruit from a magical tree.
6) so that he could ascend to heaven on a cloud
It was a sign.
When Jesus was teaching the symbolism of bread and his flesh, with wine as his blood, it was going against what they understood. Remember, up until their time the feasts all had animal sacrifices. They wrestled with the concept, and Jesus knew it.
John 6: 61
When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
In other words, is what I'm telling you going against what you have been taught? Do you think I'm twisting scripture? What would pry you from your own reasoning? So he gave a sign that would surely be impossible unless he were God.
John 6: 62
What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
What if you see my return back to the other side, will that open your minds? He's pushing them deep into the scriptures, because they knew Enoch was taken by God, and did not leave a body behind.
Genesis 5: 24
And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
They knew Elijah was taken up by God as well.
2 Kings 2: 1
And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
They knew what Ezekiel saw, and Elisha reported. They probably never saw one of these "whirlwiinds" themselves, but they do know what they are and who was seen it at least one of them.
When Jesus was taken up they saw it, and that locked in everything he was saying to them.
Acts 1: 9
And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
He didn't float up. He was taken up. The cloud is your hint to the whirlwind. He was taken up and returned to the other side the same way Enoch and Elijah were, AND he's coming back the exact same way.
Acts 1: 11
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
Revelation tells of that return. What do you think is causing the clouds?
Revelation 1: 7
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
Matthew said it's as lightening comes.
Matthew 24: 27
For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
This is a great sign for us in our day to remember what our ancestors saw. It was documented way back then, so we should not be shocked into submission when we see it in our generation. The hour of temptation happens before Christ's return. The ones who show up are not who they say they are.
